Handmade Thinking of You Card

Handmade Thinking of You Card

Today I’m sharing a current favourite of mine, a handmade Thinking of You Card.  Before we move on let’s chat about the stamp set really quick.

I am using Butterfly Gala stamp set from Stampin’ up!   I LOVE this stamp set and coordinating punch, and I’ve also paired this project with the Be Mine Stitched Dies from the current  Occasion Catalogue.

Make It Monday #5: Clean & Simple Card Sets

Make It Monday #5: Clean & Simple Card Sets

What does it mean to be Clean & Simple?  Well, it’s all about the design.  Your project needs to be

  • Uncluttered
  • Lots of White or open space
  • One main focal point

My project today features the Heartfelt Blooms Stamp Set.  This design is first of the new Distinktive Stamp range coming soon to Stampin’ Up!.  You can earn this stamp set for free when you spend $90 or more in my online store before 31 March 2018.

How are the Distinktive Stamp range different from other stamp images

The new Distinktive stamps lay down the ink at different opacities giving the finished image more depth – just ink the surface lightly for a perfect photographic finish.

As this stamp has so much detail, I’ve decided to keep it simple and only stamp in one colour of ink.  The image has been stamped with Sweet Sugarplum Classic ink the bottom left corner of a 4-1/4″ x 4-1/4″ piece of Whisper White Cardstock.

A created a border  1/4″ in from the outside along all four sides.  The greeting also comes from the same stamp set (there are 3 to choose from) stamped with Memento Black Ink.  My finished card is adhered to my 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ Sweet Sugarplum Cardbase.

  • Ink – 2016-2018 Incolours, Memento Black Ink

  • Other Double Sided adhesive, Black Stampin’ Write Marker, Ruler

Dimensions:

  • Incolour CS – 4-1/2” x 9” scored at 4-1/2” to create a 4-1/2” x 4-1/2” cardbase
  • Whisper White CS – 4-1/4” x 4-1/4”

Directions:

  1. Ink up the flower image in one colour of ink, and stamp in bottom left corner of Whisper White CS piece
  2. Draw a border around image using Basic Black Stampin’ Write marker and ruler, ¼” in from the edge
  3. Stamp your greeting in top right, using memento black ink
  4. Adhere Whisper White CS to coloured cardbase. You’re Done!

Soft Watercolour Wash

Soft Watercolour Wash

I think one of the prettiest card designs is a simple one with a Soft Watercolour Wash background. Today, I will show how to create just such a background using watercolour pencils… and not have any pencil lines showing in my colour wash. I will also show how to add some fun with watercolour splatter.

Soft Watercolour Wash

Tricks & Tips

  • By using similar shades in the same colour family, you can create a delicate, blended background. Or opt for contrasting shades to make a bold statement! Think back to the colour wheel to help you create just the right look for your watercolour card.
  • When sharpening a watercolour pencil, save the shavings to create a custom watercolour palette. Just add a few drops of water and mix to “melt down” the shavings. You can pick up an empty palette at an art supply or large craft store.

Sending Wishes – Swiped Background Technique

I’m always looking for new ways to use my stamping products with new and different ways to use some old, new and loved techniques.  Today I’m going to share with you a way to take a technique and use it in a simple fashion.  Let’s go!

Techniques are often thought of as being too time-consuming, but techniques can also be FUN and give us a chance to be extra creative.  The key is to keep the technique “simple” using a few tricks:

  • Balance fun techniques with a good amount of white-space on a card.
  • Look for a simpler/faster way to achieve the look of a technique with less effort
  • Use a technique on several cards at once.  You have a supplies out and ready so you might as well!

I first wanted to share with you a fun inking technique I call “swiping background technique“… using Stampin’ Up! classic ink pads.

Sending Wishes

Inking Techniques

For this card I’ve chosen 1 colour of ink (Blushing Bride) Hold your ink pad at a 45 degree angle and starting at the top of the cardstock piece, beginning off the edge of the cardstock, swipe the ink pad across the cardstock piece in a wave-type motion, finishing off of the CS piece. Repeat, coming back in the opposite direction and continue until you reach the bottom of the cardstock

Next turn your cardstock piece 90 degrees, and then lightly drag the ink pad across the cardstock, once again starting off the cardstock and finishing off the cardstock at the other end. Continue throughout the entire length of the cardstock, until you’ve filled in the white space as much as desired.

Watch video below on how this technique was done

Pull out your ink pads and give this technique a try, you will be surprised at how easy it is to achieve great results every time.

Masculine – For You

One of the most common requests we hear over and over again is for more masculine-themed card ideas. Most card makers would agree it’s much easier to create a card for a girl than a guy.  You can’t layer a floral spray, lace and a greeting on a card and expect a guy to appreciate it!

Creating cards for guys can be easy if you follow a few basic tips and keep it simple.  The items that are always in my card-making collection are cardstock, patterned paper, buttons, ribbons & Punches.  When designing a card for one of the guys in my life, I use the same basic supplies but with a little creative twist.  Read on as I share with you some tips on creating cards for guys.

Image00001

Cardstock: For your cardbase, select a neutral colour cardstock such as  Crumb Cake, Basic Black, Whisper White or Early Espresso.  These colours have a natural or organic feel to them and are versatile enough to use for any card design.  To create additional texture or interest, try dry embossing your cardstock, or stamp a background stamp in a lighter shade.  On today’s card, I’ve used Delightful Dijon cardbase and stamped a background stamp from Gorgeous Grunge stamp set repeatedly to the front of the card, using the stamp off technique.
2016-08-09_00002

Ink: One layer cards don’t have to be boring, and with a few different techniques you can create some great masterpieces.  For this card I wanted to add texture to the background and to do this you will need to choose 2 colours of dye‐ based ink. TIP:  choose colours that are next to each other in the colour wheel that way they will blend well together.

I started with the lightest colour of ink (So Saffron). Press it a number of times onto a non‐ stick craft sheet (alternately you can use heavy weight plastic or wax paper). Make sure that your “pool” of ink is larger than the surface area of your card, I took my Whisper White Cardstock and carefully drag it through the pool of ink.

Next press the second colour of ink (Delightful Dijon)  2‐3 times onto the non‐stick craft mat then drag my Whisper White piece again through the pool of ink, lifting the cardstock  and then re‐drag it in another area of your ink.  Repeat until you have as much coverage as desired.

2016-08-09_00001

Selecting an image:  Look for a generic image, a tree or branch,  a bird, a boat or car.  My favourite go to stamp set for masculine cards is Lovely as a Tree,  which has been stamped onto my custom background using Black Archival Ink.  Find a greeting to match your card.  Choose greetings that match your card design, look at the style of the font as well as the type of greeting will help you decide what to use.

Embellishments: No card design is complete without embellishments.  A flower might be your typical go-to embellishment but that won’t work here. Consider using circles, stars or other geometric shapes.  For a really dynamic card, create a shape that is textured, using corrugated paper.  Embellishments such as these can be painted or inked to match your project perfectly. Reach for buttons, which work perfectly on masculine cards.  Change colour of your rhinestones or basic pearls by colouring them in with sharpie markers like I have on today’s project.  Finally, swap our silk ribbons and laces for linen thread or baker’s twine, wrapping twine around a card multiple times and tying into a simple bow finishes off a card as beautifully as a ribbon.

2016-08-09_00003

I’ve also created  video for you on how this project was created.  You can view the video below

As you can see there are truly many options for creating masculine cards, and this was just a small sampling of the possibilities.  I hope this has helped nudge any creative block you might have with regards to masculine cards and that you are now inspired to create!

Sketch Challenge

Do you ever struggle trying to work out how to create your card?  Me too, and one of the easiest ways I find to help with my card creation is a sketch. For this card I've used the Sketch from my Team Sketch Challenge.

For the Birds, Too Kind

Here's how I created the card:

  1. Fold the 21 x 15cm piece of Crumb Cake CS in half, with a bone folder, creating a 15 x 10.5cm card base, and set aside
  2. Stick the 15 x 5cm piece of Stacked With Love Designer Paper Stack to the 15 x 5.5cm piece of Real Red Cardstock leaving equal boarders both left and right sides using adhesive
  3. Stick the matted piece of Stacked with Live DP to the card base, about 1/2cm in from the left hand side, using snail adhesive
  4. Stamp the greeting from Too Kind Stamp set onto the left hand side of the 4 x 8.5cm piece of Whisper White Cardstock using Memento Black ink
  5. Apply a piece of Matte Removable tape over the greeting on the Bird Image from For The Birds stamp set.  Ink up the image using Memento Black ink.  Remove the tape and stamp the image onto the right had side of the 4 x 8.5cm piece of Whisper White Cardstock
  6. Round the right side corners on the 4 x 8.5cm piece of Whisper White Cardstock
  7. Colour the bird using a blender pen and Real Red Classic Ink
  8. Colour the heart, using a blender pen and Real Red Classic Ink
  9. Stick the 4 x 8.5cm piece of Whisper White CS to the card approx 2cm up from the bottom of the card, using Stampin' Dimentionals.  You're done!

Masking

Today is the last card to feature in our World Card Making event, and today I will show you a clever way of masking using die cuts yields a fabulous faux label look! I will share with you a  different yet equally fun inky technique by multi-piece stamping.

Petite Pairs, Flower Patch

Tips & Tricks to Note

    • If you don’t have a frame die, you can accomplish this technique using two different sizes of dies, one for the outside of the frame and one for the center. Try mixing and matching shapes for fun!
    • Keep your frame masks for future projects by saving them on a piece of plastic—leftover packaging works great for this
    • Have a stamp set with multi-piece images… and you aren’t quite sure how it’s supposed to work? Try Googling the name of the stamp set! You’re likely to come up with loads of examples of how others have used the set to create scenes, flower clusters, and more.

Directions

      1. Fold a 21 x 15cm Whisper White CS in half creating a 10.5 x 15cm cardbase
      2. Position 2 die cut banners from the Banner Framelits, the smaller inside the larger, on a piece of copy paper.  Secure the frames using washi tape and die cut through the big shot
      3. Separate the three resulting pieces:  the outside negative frame, the positive frame die cut and the center banner.  Reserve the positive frame ato help you position your negatives and for use on  future projects
      4. Center the positive frame die cut onto your Whisper White Cardbase.  Using dotto adhesive center the banner, and next it in the center of the positive frame die cut.  Remove the positive frame die cut, and set it aside.  You now have a masked banner frame on your card
      5. Randomly stamp the flower image in Crisp Cantalope and the center flower using Calypso Coral.  Randomly stamp the flower image again but with Coastal Cabana Ink and the center flower using Bermuda Bay Classic Ink. Stamp the next size flower with Crushed Curry Classic ink. Stamp the smallest flower with Old Olive Classic Ink
      6. Fill a Stampin’ Sprizer with Rubbing Alcohol and a few drop of Pear Pizzazz re inker. Spray onto your card front
      7. Remove the masks
      8. Stamp the greeting in the center using Stazon Black ink.  You’re Done!
